History

Navsadguri (ნავსადგური) means harbour: a place where boats put in. Lakes and rivers fed Georgian villages, especially on the many fasting days of the Orthodox calendar, when fish could be eaten but meat could not.

Fishermen worked from small wooden boats and landings with nets and traps. Where raiders could come by water, a watchtower over the landing guarded the boats.
