History
Tusheti lies on the northern side of the Greater Caucasus, on the border with Dagestan. The Tushes lived by sheep herding and hunting, moving their flocks down to the Kakhetian lowlands for the winter.
Their villages of stone towers, such as Dartlo and the fortress of Keselo above Omalo, sheltered families during raids. Tushes fought for the Kakhetian kings, and in 1659 they took part in the Bakhtrioni uprising against Persian rule.
