Magharo

Magharo

Economy

A mine dug into the mountainside. Rich at first, then the seam runs thin: 5 coins at the first dawn, then 4, then 3, then 2 every dawn after. Deepening it opens a new seam. If raiders bring one down, its powder goes up.

History

Magharo (მაღარო) means mine. Georgia's mountains were mined for silver, copper, lead and iron since antiquity.

In the 18th century King Erekle II reopened the silver and copper mines of Akhtala and Alaverdi in Somkhiti, worked by Greek miners who came from Anatolia. Their silver was struck into Georgian coin.
