Shatili, on the Argun in Khevsureti, is a single fortress of dozens of stone towers joined wall to wall. The Khevsurs held their gorges against raiders from the north for centuries.

The story

Khevsureti, north of the main ridge of the Caucasus, 18th century.

Raiders come down three gorges. There are no camps to train soldiers here, and little coin: only towers, and your lord.

Hold for fourteen nights. The Khevsurs will come down from their villages, but not soon. The cold will be as dangerous as the raiders.

The Khevsurs kept their gorges and their customs into the 20th century. The tower villages of Shatili and Mutso still stand above the Argun.
