History
Nuker comes from the Mongol word nokor, meaning companion. In the Mongol world, nukers were armed followers who fought in their lord's army and were rewarded with provisions, a share of the spoils and later land.
From the 14th century the word spread across the Caucasus, Central Asia and Iran, where it meant an armed retainer bound to a khan or bek, serving as bodyguard and personal attendant. In Dagestan the feudal lord commanded both his nukers and the people's militia in war.
The Avar nutsals of Khunzakh relied on retainers like these, but the size and equipment of their guard in the 18th century are not well documented.
