History
Jar-Belakan was a league of self-governing communities on the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus, running down to the Alazani valley east of Kakheti. Its communities governed themselves through assemblies called jamaats.
Much of this land had been Kakhetian borderland until Shah Abbas I gave part of it to his Dagestani allies, and the Kakhetian kings who tried to reclaim it lost a decisive battle in 1695. It became a base for raids into Kakheti.
In 1755 contingents from Jar-Belakan joined the siege of Kvareli. When Erekle II sent a raiding party against their undefended villages, they left the siege to protect their families, which helped break it. Riding raiders are a game choice: the sources don't say they fought mainly on horseback.
