History
In Dagestan the word uzden meant a free person. The class was not uniform: some uzden families stood close to the nobility, while most were free community members who held their own land and owed various duties to a ruler.
By the 18th century many free uzdens lived in self-governing unions of village communities rather than directly under a khan. In wartime the people's militia, together with the lord's retainers, was commanded by a feudal ruler such as the Avar nutsal.
Dagestan had a long arms-making tradition, with the village of Kubachi its best-known centre. Most surviving decorated Dagestani firearms date from the 19th century, so the exact guns of 18th-century uzdens are less well documented.
