History

Omar Khan (Umma Khan V), nutsal of Avaria from 1774 to 1801, led a large army into Georgia in the mid-1780s with Ottoman encouragement. He struck deep into Kartli and took several fortresses.

In autumn 1785 he besieged Vakhani fortress in Upper Imereti. Unable to take it by storm, his men twice tried to blow it up, without success. The castle fell only after its lord, a prince of the Abashidze family, was seized while negotiating.

The sources do not describe a separate corps of sappers. This unit stands for the mining and blasting attempts recorded at Vakhani.
